Anger
First mentioned in a document in 1196, this quarter of town was referred to as Weidt Anger or Waydanger (Woad Square) in the Middle Ages, because it was a bustling place where woad products were traded. Woad was the plant that supplied the popular blue dye extract at the time. Even after woad trading had come to an end, Anger remained Erfurt’s No. 1 business precinct and shopping street. The name Anger suggests that the terrain had once been an open space between the first settlements and the city wall.
