Wenigemarkt
To the east of Merchants’ Bridge in the old quarters of town, the visitor will find a square which has been called Wenigemarkt since 1831. Its existence has been documented since 1217. Its name means "Little Market," as opposed to the big market once situated right in front of the Graden, on part of today’s Domplatz. Originally, Wenigemarkt had served the merchants’ settlement that had been set up on the east side of the River Gera in the 11th and 12th centuries. Over time, however, it lost its importance as a trading place. Structures built around 1875 characterise the architecture of Wenigemarkt.
