Erfurt University, the "alma mater erfordiensis" founded in 1392 and closed in 1816 was re-founded on 29th April, 1994.
In addition to the university, two other institutions of higher education are situated in Erfurt: a Fachhochschule (University of Applied Sciences) and the "Theologische Fakultät Erfurt" (Roman Catholic Divinity School/Theological College). If you want to learn more about the University of Erfurt or the Fachhochschule Erfurt, just visit their websites.
In Erfurt it is possible to go to private schools such as the Montessori Integrative School or the "Regenbogenschule". There are also some specialized vocational schools such as the school for hotel management and gastronomy, the school for heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology, and the school for electrical engineering.
At the moment, the city of Erfurt hosts 32 state-run primary schools, 17 state-run "Regelschulen" (roughly comparable to British secondary modern schools), 11 state-run grammar schools including a special school for pupils gifted in mathematics and science and similarly, another school offering specialist coaching in sport. In addition, there is a "cooperative" and an "integrative" comprehensive school, a grammar school run by the Protestant Church ("Evangelisches Ratsgymnasium") and another grammar school ("Edith-Stein-Schule") run by the Roman Catholic Church. The Edith-Stein-Schule also has a secondary modern stream.
The inter-regional special education schools for the physically handicapped and for the deaf enjoy an excellent reputation. In 10 regional state-run special education schools for the mentally and handicapped linguistically challenged pupils as well as for those with special learning disabilities, highly trained specialists and experienced experts in rehabilitation are able to work in small groups with the children.
Apprentices receive their theoretical and practical training at 7 state-run vocational schools.
Children and adolescents with special interests receive support and instruction in the "Musikschule" (music school), the "Malschule" (school of visual arts) or they can go to one of the many courses offered by the "Schülerakademie" (pupils’ academy of further education). Adults can do the same at the "Erfurter Volkshochschule" (Erfurt community college of further education).
